[00:00:26] Welcome to episode 49, Equilibrium, the Equinox.
[00:00:31] Before we begin this episode, I would love to invite you into Lumen, which is my reading society for women.
[00:00:41] And something one of the women said to me today really captured why I created it. She told me that she didn't want to join because she only reads fiction.
[00:00:57] And then she caught herself and she shared this with me. She said, why aren't I pushing myself? Why can't I read something that makes me feel uncomfortable?
[00:01:06] And I thought, yes, that is exactly it. And the philosophy of Lumen is read dangerously.
[00:01:15] And what I mean by that is reading outside your usual interests.
[00:01:21] Women are reading what they haven't encountered before. They're reading history and, you know, it's complicating what they thought they knew. And they're reading ideas that they agree with and some that they really wrestle with. And you know, sometimes we'll argue with the page. And I encourage the women in Lumen to do that. And this is why I also have the component of having three live calls and the last two circles, and including this third one that we begin today, we have the author that comes in on the. The last live session and we're able to discuss the book with the author, which is it has just been, or every book so far has been such an incredible journey.
[00:02:15] And so if that is you, if you are kind of sitting on the fence, I really want to encourage you to come into the room. I really want to create a movement of women of different age, ages, different backgrounds and experiences and, and talking about this. And this is the community that I really want to build with Lumen. Like women that are, you know, have that intellectual hunger and they're spiritually curious and they're willing to challenge themselves and they're interested in what other women know.
[00:02:56] And so with that, I invite you to our next book, which is Good Witch In Search of Our Lost Feminine Power by Lucy Ann Tonti.
[00:03:09] And over the next three months, we are going to be reading this together and like I said, coming together for three live sessions.
[00:03:18] And it is just my favorite thing. So I wanted to let you know about that. So today is the last day to enroll in that.
[00:03:28] So I'm going to leave the links in the show. Notes. And if that calls to you, I would love to have you in it.
[00:03:35] And now I'd like to get into this episode with you.
[00:03:39] So equinox. Equinox and the solstice, I think, are so such important points for us to really come back and remember, because the equinox is when the Earth is bringing us back into equilibrium. And I really want us to focus on that point because it's equal day and night.
[00:04:04] So the sun technically crosses the celestial equator and day and night, that's why they become close to equal length.
[00:04:13] And so at that moment, we're sort of standing at the centre of two movements with one hemisphere beginning its journey towards greater light, which is the southern hemisphere hemisphere.
[00:04:30] And the northern hemisphere is beginning its journey towards greater darkness.
[00:04:37] And so this equinox, depending on where you are, it's falling on the 22nd or 23rd of September.
[00:04:45] And I love this symbolism because there's something really elegant about the Earth reaching this point where it has this equality and then it. And then it just moves onwards.
[00:05:01] And so I think when we go into the symbolism of this, that balance only lasts for a moment and then the movement continues.
[00:05:14] And I think there's an important takeaway from. From this, because we're always told in our culture that way, you know, find the balance, don't be unbalanced.
[00:05:28] And I really love coming back to the seasons and these points in time, because the Earth is showing to us that that isn't always possible. Like, there is seasons, there is time for movement, there's time for stillness, and it's just acknowledging where you are. And so there's nothing bad or wrong. And so from here in the southern hemisphere, we're moving into spring and then towards the summer solstice, and the northern hemisphere is obviously moving into autumn and then towards winter solstice.
[00:06:09] And eventually both hemispheres will reach that further expression of that movement and then begin traveling back towards one another. So we go, equinox, solstice. Equinox, solstice. And this is really important because there's a lot of arbitrary dates that are decided in the calendar year, when the season change is. But it's very clear when we look at the planetary movements that these are times for light increasing, reaching its fullness, and then it's beginning to decrease and darkness increasing.
[00:06:48] And so there's this order to it. And when we begin to pay attention to these movements, you realize how much of life is organized through these cycles. And this is what it really brings me back to, because our natural world is Showing us that there is that time to emerge, a time for growth, a time for fullness, that, you know, a harvest, and then there is also decline, a time for rest.
[00:07:21] And then, you know, the. The cycle starts again, eventually another beginning.
[00:07:27] And for thousands of years, we lived to these movements, and we understood that the seasons were fundamental to survival.
[00:07:38] And the movement of the sun, the moon, the stars, this is what gave us the calendar.
[00:07:46] And while there's changes in light and temperature and rainfall and vegetation and even animal behavior.
[00:07:55] And it told us when to plant, to harvest, to preserve food, when to move, when to prepare for conditions ahead.
[00:08:08] And time was something you could always see happening around you. And I feel now we're really disconnected from that.
[00:08:16] Where I live now, it's further out of the city, and I really notice the changing length of day more than I ever have, and also the flowering of plants and, you know, plants losing their leaves.
[00:08:33] And every day you can see these tiny changes. And, yeah, it really has given me a closer connection to myself and to timing. And I think there is something really spiritual about returning our attention to time because we've become really good at understanding chronological time and increasingly disconnected from cyclical time. We know the date, the hour, the financial quarter. We're in how many weeks until Christmas.
[00:09:13] But what is more interesting to me is always coming back to what season of life are you actually in.
[00:09:25] So here in the Southern hemisphere, we are crossing into spring, and I can really feel that movement in myself.
[00:09:32] And this is spring and summer have always been seasons where my energy naturally rises, where I become more social and I naturally want more movement, adventure, being around more people, more experiences, I really start to feel this aliveness. And then as we move towards summer, you know, wanting to be outside, wanting dinners, wanting conversations with very interesting people, wanting to travel. Movement, creativity, all of this really starts to come alive for me. And I've started leaning into that now.
[00:10:12] And this is, you know, when we are seeing the environment around us. This is where the flowers start to open. The seeds are coming up out of the soil. The birds, you. You'll notice are becoming louder.
[00:10:26] Animals are becoming more active. Like the color returns the fragrance of the flowers.
[00:10:34] Just life is becoming more visible, more.
[00:10:40] Yeah, alive. And this is how I feel, and this is why I really allow myself now to expand.
[00:10:47] And that expansion is really going to be supported. And this is where I've been leaning into following desire to create, to become visible, to really increase that movement, to really start to participate more.
[00:11:05] And if you're listening in the northern hemisphere, you are entering autumn and moving into a completely different conversation with nature, where the growing season starts to reach its culmination. And so the light is receding and you're preparing for those colder months ahead.
[00:11:25] And so autumn has this, you know, harvest. And so you look at what has grown, you're gathering what has ripened, you're preserving what has value. And you become more discerning about where your energy is going because the abundance of summer, it's, you know, giving away to a seasons where your resources matter differently and there's no. There's no one that's better or the other. And this is what I love about working with the seasons, because you find what you love most about them.
[00:12:04] And so there is something beautiful about thinking about the tree because it understands when sustaining every leaf is no longer the wisest use of its resources. And so it starts to begin that process of release.
[00:12:22] You are allowing what has completed its function to return to the earth and become the material for the other cycle. And so I think there is this wisdom in knowing when something has given you what it came to give you. And so that could be a version of yourself, a habit, a role that you have played for even years, or a belief that once helped you understand the world, and now it's. It's holding you back. It could be a way of working, it could be a dream.
[00:12:58] And so some things belong to us for a season, and their completion creates space and material that, you know, what we've learned, what we've gained from, what another season eventually grows from.
[00:13:13] And this is one of the reasons I find Equinox so powerful, because the entire planet is holding those two movements simultaneously. And so somewhere is flowering, somewhere is shedding. And then you. We've got the beginning, we've got the completing.
[00:13:34] And so it's just leaning into life and its seasons. And when we start thinking cyclically, we recognize that these same patterns happen within our own life. Because we move through these periods of emergence, expansion, completion, retreat, regeneration.
[00:14:00] And especially as women, being cyclical, being so connected to the moon and the cycle, the lunar cycle, bleed cycle.
[00:14:12] And so there are seasons when opportunities, they arrive from, you know, they just. They arrive.
[00:14:21] And, you know, we're highly visible. We're meeting people, we're building, we're creating, we're earning, we're traveling, taking risks.
[00:14:29] And then there's also these seasons of apprenticeship where there's little is visible from the outside, but we're building those foundations. And, you know, that's built through study, through discipline, through repetition, through experience.
[00:14:48] And I've noticed this in my life.
[00:14:51] And then there are seasons of harvest where something we began years earlier, it finally ripens. And this is where that persistence is important.
[00:15:02] And there's also these seasons of dismantling our identities, our relationships, our structures. And that really begins to loosen because the person who built them has changed. And then there are seasons that resemble that winter when that visible evidence of progress can be really scarce, while something much deeper is happening beneath the surface.
[00:15:33] And this is where Vedic astrology, I feel, becomes incredibly useful. And it has been for me, because Jyotish is really fundamentally a study of time.
[00:15:47] It gives us a way of recognizing the season. And one of the most powerful ways that we understand that is through the Dasha system.
[00:15:56] These are known as planetary periods. If you've had a reading with me, we would have gone into this because to know it is so important. It was so when I started learning about the Dashas, because there is no equivalent within the Western astrology. This is why you might not have heard it before, but this is why Vedic astrology is actually so predictive, because there is aspects like the Dasha system of timing, timing of your life. And it's said that our soul chooses what planetary periods to go through at certain ages, so we can really tap into the energy of these planets that are influencing us and use that to help us. And this is why I will always say within my readings what chapter you're in and how to practically work with it, because I think it's so important that we are channeling our energy where we're going to get the biggest return. Because this, it's so easy to scatter our energy and there's, you know, so many things that you could be doing.
[00:17:16] But when we have that focus, we can really start to create that momentum.
[00:17:23] And so knowing your Jasha, it can change the way that you understand your life because it's telling us something about that larger chapter that you're in. And so in Jyotish, life is unfolding through these planetary periods and these planets, depending on which one it is for you, they are activating particular houses, themes, karmas, areas of development according to where they're placed within your birth chart. And so, for example, a Saturn period, it carries a completely different texture from, say, a Venus period.
[00:18:07] And yeah, there's just so, so much to go into here. But this is one of the things, like I said, that I wish more people understood about astrology because we can spend that enormous energy comparing, especially on the visible surface of our lives, with Someone who is living through a completely different planetary season.
[00:18:31] And I know before understanding and learning this information, I was like, oh, this is what I need to do.
[00:18:39] And now looking back the period that I was in, like, no wonder I burnt myself out, because I wasn't in the period for that. Had I known that wisdom, you know, it's just. And this is why I teach it to my clients.
[00:19:00] And so, you know, one person might be in a chapter of enormous worldly expansion and recognition and opportunity, and another person is, you know, completely opposites, restructuring the foundations of their life are being rebuilt.
[00:19:20] And so this is where the question becomes less about where you should be at a certain age and more about what time is it in your life.
[00:19:34] And, yeah, this is one of the deepest gifts of understanding your dasha because it gives that context, because the season outside your window and the season operating through your chart can be completely different. And this is why I'm overlaying them here. I'm saying, you know, the season, but then there's also the greater season of your dasha. And so when you can align the dasha and your seasons, it's magical.
[00:20:04] And so this is just something to think about. And we are rarely living one cycle at a time. There are cycles inside cycles, inside cycles.
[00:20:18] Obviously there's a solar year, lunar month, menstrual cycle, the stages of life, the dasha, the. The transits through our birth chart. And so this is where there's those different rhythms in life.
[00:20:32] And this is where it brings me back to the word equilibrium and returning to the equinox, because equilibrium has movement inside of it. It asks us to become sensitive enough to recognize what requires more energy and what requires less.
[00:20:51] And where life is asking you to participate and where it's asking you to wait, where something needs more discipline. And then the opposite of that, where something needs space.
[00:21:06] And there will be moments when equilibrium means expanding enormously because you have spent long enough preparing.
[00:21:18] And then there's the opposite of that. There'll be periods where equilibrium means conserving your energy because life is asking you for consolidation. And there's going to be times when the work is to become visible and times when the work is happening privately. And knowing the season changes the way that you interpret all of your experiences.
[00:21:42] And so winter makes more sense when you know it's winter.
[00:21:47] And I think. And even that comes back to menstrual cycle.
[00:21:52] If you have unlocked the key of understanding your cycle within your cycle, which I'm talking about your menstrual cycle, you will Know how, how differently your life is once you figure that out.
[00:22:12] So I think the deepest invitation of equinox is to look at the season outside, but also the season, your body, the season of your dasha, and also the season that is unfolding underneath everything that you can currently see and really meaning your life there.
[00:22:38] And I really do believe there's a time for everything.
[00:22:42] And the wisdom comes when we learn to recognize the time that we are in.
[00:22:51] And so the practice around equinox is becoming more observant of the direction that our life is moving in because this equinox gives us the opportunity to look at, yeah, outside and the seasons of the larger season that we are in and then begin to arrange our lives with greater respect for all of that.
[00:23:19] And so for the Southern hemisphere, the movement is towards greater light, longer days, warmth, and, you know, spring and then eventually summer. And I think there is something really beautiful about consciously meeting that expansion rather than allowing another season to simply just unfold and happen to us.
[00:23:44] And so what I would love you to ask yourself, if you're in the southern hemisphere, is where you want more life, where you want to be seen more, how you want to participate more, create, move, meet more people.
[00:24:01] Maybe it's spending more time outside, becoming more physical, traveling, entertaining, making something, wearing the beautiful thing, starting a project, opening the doors of your home, saying yes to the invitation.
[00:24:17] Spring is that time to consider what has been incubated bathing through winter and now it's ready to come out into the world. Because eventually there comes a point where that preparation, we've done the work and the next stage of growth.
[00:24:34] This is the participation that is the growth.
[00:24:38] And so I would choose one thing you want to bring into greater visibility this season. So it could be your work, your creativity, your body, friendships, your home, or simply you feeling more alive.
[00:24:56] And yeah, so what, what does that look like for you? Might be putting dinners in the calendar, booking the trip, planting something, beginning the training, making the introduction, wearing more colour, move your morning outside, invite people over, taking the idea that has been, you know, private in your mind and, and putting it out into the world and also paying attention to your body as a light changes as well. Because there is something so intelligent about allowing our routines to change with the season rather than expecting ourselves to live exactly the same way for 12 months of a year. And if you want to go more into this, definitely look at, at Ayurveda, because we have dinner Chario, which is the daily routines, and they slightly change. And Ayurveda also has an Incredible regime that they start before the.
[00:25:58] Before the season changes because they know that this is typically the season change. It has that instability.
[00:26:06] This is typically where people will get sick. And so, yeah, definitely go into that. I could do. I could talk on that for days. But then coming to the northern hemisphere, and this is the opposite. So your movement is towards the shorter days. And it's going to be autumn, eventually winter, and it's a completely different question. It's what is worth carrying forward for you.
[00:26:36] And so autumn, the season of harvest.
[00:26:39] And the harvest is discerning because you gather what has ripened, you preserve what has value, and then you allow the rest to return to the earth. And so looking back at what has grown this year and actually acknowledge it, I think that is really important.
[00:26:58] What worked, what became stronger, what did you learn? What relationships deepened, what did you create?
[00:27:08] What reaches final maturity? And then look at what is still consuming your energy.
[00:27:14] And there may be commitments, habits, relationships, possessions, ambition, expectations that belonged beautifully to another season. And now they have completed their work. And so for you, I would say choose one thing to preserve and one thing to release.
[00:27:37] So preserve the practice that changed you, or maybe the friendship that has become important, or the knowledge you've gained, or the financial or physical habit that strengthened your foundations, and then allowing something else to become the compost.
[00:27:57] So that could be cleaning the cupboard, finishing a project, reducing your obligation, creating more space in the diary, and making your home somewhere you actually want to spend the darker months as well. I think that is incredibly important because so many people say to me that they really struggle with winter. But I'm wondering how you can really lean into this. And so whatever hemisphere you are listening from, I would bring it back to your dasha as well, if you know that that's incredibly important.
[00:28:37] Asking yourself, what season are you personally in?
[00:28:41] What has been the dominant theme of this chapter of your life? What keeps asking for your attention?
[00:28:47] What has become easier? What has been harder to ignore?
[00:28:54] And then coming back to the equinox with the southern hemisphere, what are you ready to grow?
[00:29:02] And the northern hemisphere, what are you ready to harvest?
[00:29:06] And then, yeah, really asking these questions over the solstice and when you are taking notice of the equinox and the solstice, notice what changes between now the equinox and solstice.
[00:29:24] Notice what grows, notice what falls away.
[00:29:27] Notice where your energy naturally moves to, and notice where it becomes obvious with your time.
[00:29:37] And when you start paying attention, this is the wisdom, you're paying attention to your life in this way and so knowing your season, knowing the season of the earth beneath your feet, knowing the season of your body, knowing the planetary season you're moving through, and then also knowing, knowing what is asking for more of you and what has received enough, and then really meeting the season fully. So I'm going to leave this episode there. As always. I would love for your feedback. I'd love to know what season you're in and yeah, share with me. I'm sending you lots of love and I'll speak to you soon.
